Electric skateboard comparison: the 2026 market in figures
The market, seen from the workshop
The key points
According to research firms (MarkWide Research, Coherent Market Insights), the global electric skateboard market is worth between 1.8 and 5.2 billion dollars in 2026. It has two segments: urban boards, sold for roughly €500 to €1,500, and high-end all-terrain, from €2,000 to €4,000. Sternboard is in the second segment. A serious price comparison therefore separates these two categories before comparing two boards.
Estimates that vary by a factor of three
Research firms do not agree on the exact size of the market: MarkWide Research puts forward a wide range, while Coherent Market Insights and Future Market Insights publish different figures depending on their methodology. This gap is not an anomaly; it reflects how young the sector is: there is no single international classification standard between electric skateboard, electric longboard and electric mountainboard. A motorised skateboard sold as a children's toy and an all-terrain board with a 2000 W motor sometimes end up in the same statistical box.
What the figures do confirm, across all firms: double-digit growth over the decade, driven by urbanisation and the search for individual mobility outside public transport.
Two segments, two customer groups
Urban boards target commuting, on tarmac, with 20 to 40 km of range. High-end all-terrain, where Sternboard sits, targets mixed use, city and countryside: sand, snow, forest tracks, mountains. There, a motor built into the wheel and waterproofing count for more than top speed.
What this means for a price comparison
Comparing a €600 electric skateboard with a €2,900 all-terrain board makes no sense: neither the uses nor the expected robustness are the same. For a consistent comparison, the comparison tool on The Stern' page sets out motor, range, weight and price of the 8 configurations side by side.
Why it matters before you buy
A fast-growing market also attracts players who change their range or disappear within a few seasons. Before investing several thousand euros in an electric skateboard, it is sensible to check how long the brand has been around, the availability of spare parts and the guarantee offered. See The Stern' page for details of the guarantees and configurations available from Sternboard.
