Electric skateboard maintenance guide

Maintenance, waterproofing, compliance, insurance: straight answers from the Sternboard team. For anything else, Adrien answers the phone, Monday to Sunday, 9am to 6pm.

The Stern' in brief

Designed to last without maintenance

Three wheels: more stable than four

In physics, three points of contact is the most stable arrangement: a stool never wobbles, and photographers put their cameras on a tripod.

The very wide rear wheel (16 cm) gives more grip on loose ground. The feel is closer to snowboarding and surfing than to skateboarding.

The motor in the rear wheel

No pulley, no belt, no gears: the brushless motor sits directly inside the rear wheel. No maintenance on the motor, and it is completely waterproof.

1000 W or 2000 W nominal power; the 2000 W reaches up to 4500 W at peak.

The battery in a backpack

The board is lighter, so it is more pleasant to ride. The battery, by far the most expensive part, is protected from water, knocks and off-road vibration.

The made-to-measure bag leaves plenty of room for your things: a laptop for the commute, a bottle of water or a picnic on a ride out.

Dimensions

17 kg without the backpack battery; 20 kg for the Stern' Urban, integrated battery included. 135 cm long, 45 cm wide at the front and 17 cm at the rear, 25 cm high.

Wooden deck, a maple and bamboo blend, 14 layers. 48 V lithium-ion battery.

Maintenance and waterproofing

A rinse with the hose, and off you go

Does the Stern' need a lot of maintenance?

No, it is very simple: mainly a rinse with a hosepipe. Now and then, check a few screws and put some WD-40 in the bearings and suspension. That's all.

Is the Stern' waterproof?

Yes, it is even submersible.

Is the integrated battery waterproof?

Yes, against rain, splashes and puddles.

How long do the tyres last?

Thousands of kilometres. What wears them most: riding fast on tarmac in summer.

How do you change a tyre?

The rim unscrews into two halves: no need to lever the tyre off with a screwdriver.

How much do the tyres cost?

They are on sale in the shop, at the cost price we pay our suppliers: €40 a pair.

What about punctures?

Very rare. At the front, they are standard 10-inch inner tubes: if you get a puncture, a squirt of puncture-repair spray and you are off again, and a new tube costs a few euros in any DIY shop. At the rear, the tyre is tubeless, with sealant: you don't get punctures at the rear.

What about after-sales service?

We have all the parts and do everything in our workshop. For any question, call Adrien: his number is on the Contact page.

Compliance and insurance

Compliant from delivery

Is the Stern' EDPM-compliant?

Yes, from delivery: front light, red rear light, reflectors, horn, and speed limited to 25 km/h. It can therefore ride on public roads, under the rules for EDPMs.

What legal category is it in?

EDPM (engin de déplacement personnel motorisé), the French legal category for powered personal transporters: the same category as electric scooters.

Does the Stern' need to be insured?

Yes, like any electric vehicle.

How much does insurance cost?

Between €3 and €4 a month.

How do I insure it?

Insurers now know the Stern'; if not, we can suggest partners. To be insured, it has to be EDPM-compliant: everything needed is already supplied with the Stern'. We can also give you a certificate of compliance to pass on to your insurer.

Everyday use

In town, at work, out riding

How do I protect my Stern' from theft?

Lock it up like a bike, with an ordinary bike or motorbike lock.

Does it have a GPS tracker?

Not as standard, but you can fit an AirTag or its Android equivalent.

Is there room left in the bag for my things?

Yes, plenty. The bags are made to measure for the Stern': there is room left for going to work (a laptop) or for a ride out (a bottle of water, a picnic).
