3-wheel electric skateboard on cycle paths

In France, on public roads, the Stern' falls under the EDPM legal category (engin de déplacement personnel motorisé, a powered personal transporter), subject to conditions: speed restricted to 25 km/h, riding on cycle paths or roads limited to 50 km/h, compulsory third-party liability insurance, minimum age of 14.

The guide

Cycle paths, without a second thought

A 3-wheel electric skateboard that complies with the EDPM rules

EDPM-compliant, the Stern' can be ridden on cycle paths, but not on pavements.

Why three wheels rather than a scooter

With its three wheels and its motor in the rear wheel, the Stern' has neither the stability of an unpowered skateboard nor that of a scooter with handlebars: it has its own. You ride sideways, as on a snowboard. It takes a little time to get used to, but you have better control in corners than standing facing the road.

Sharing the path with others

On a cycle path, the Stern' shares the space with cyclists and sometimes pedestrians. Its compact size makes overtaking at a controlled speed easier. The EDPM rules require front and rear lights from nightfall, and forbid wearing earphones in both ears while riding.

What French law says

The EDPM category is defined by the French Highway Code: maximum speed 25 km/h, no riding on pavements unless locally permitted, compulsory insurance, no passengers. Belgium applies similar rules. For details country by country, including outside France, see the Regulations page.

Recommended set-up for city use

For regular commuting on cycle paths, an integrated battery set-up saves you carrying a backpack. For longer journeys mixing cycle paths and other terrain, a backpack battery set-up gives more range. See the product page The Stern' with integrated battery. See the Regulations page, country by country.
