Electric skateboard or electric scooter: the comparison

Electric skateboard or electric scooter: both are powered personal transporters (EDPM in France). One is ridden without handlebars, with a remote control; the other with handlebars.

Skateboard or scooter: what are we talking about?

Both follow the same rules in France (EDPM): 25 km/h maximum and compulsory third-party liability insurance. The difference lies in the terrain.

The Stern' versus an electric scooter

Control: by remote control, without handlebars, for the Stern'; with handlebars for the scooter. Stance: sideways, as in boardsports; or standing, facing the road. Wheels: 3 for the Stern'; 2 for the scooter. Terrain: tarmac, cycle paths, tracks, sand, and snow with the Snow Kit for the Stern'; mainly tarmac and cycle paths for the scooter. Waterproofing: IP67 for the Stern'; varies by scooter model. Range: 20 to 100 km depending on the battery for the Stern'; varies by scooter model.

Beyond the figures, real-world use

For a daily journey on tarmac, the two are broadly equal. To leave the cycle paths, the all-terrain electric skateboard has the edge, thanks to its waterproofing and suitable tyres. It is also a question of stance: standing behind handlebars, or sideways, as on a board.

A note on vocabulary

The word "skate" is sometimes used for any wheeled device. An electric skateboard is still a board, different from roller skates or an unpowered longboard. The exact specifications of each Stern' are on its product page.
